Riverton Students Cheer Their Special Olympians

On April 28 Riverton’s Special Olympics Team experienced an incredible send-off by students and staff joined by Jeanne Crocker and Superintendent Xavier Botana. The entire school gathered at the front of the building as the Special Olympics athletes and support staff paraded through the crowd to their bus, waiting to take them to the 2017 Special Olympics Cumberland County Area Games. Thunderous cheers and applause and waving signs brought wide smiles to the students faces and energized them the entire way to Bonny Eagle HS in Standish.

The 20 Special Olympians from the Bridge Programs and self-contained classroom, participated in running events such as 50m, 100m or 200m dash, standing, or running long jump, and softball throw. Despite a few rain showers early on, the athletes gave their best effort as they competed with other Special Olympians from other Cumberland County programs. The students have been practicing all year under the guidance of classroom staff, physical and occupational therapists, and gym teacher, Bill Roak.

Once again the students were surprised upon their return to school, as students gathered in the hallways, enthusiastically cheering the athletes’ return. Our Olympians seemed to walk a little taller, with broad smiles, as they proudly wore their medals honoring their victories, holding up the beautiful personal sign presented to them by the Riverton PTO.

Many thanks to our Riverton community for the support shown to our athletes on this special day as well as to the Riverton PTO for the team t-shirts and personalized signs presented for each athlete.
